West Virginia Birth Records: Discover Your Loved One's True Identity

Birth records are considered part of a state and local government's vital records database, stored for the public to freely examine and use for their own research and information. These records often include copies of official birth certificates, which will provide you with the following information:

  • Date and place of birth
  • Full birth name
  • Full names of parents and their personal identifying information

As early as 1853, significant events such as births and deaths are mandated by the law to be registered in their respective county clerks, although a lot of records from 1917-1921 were destroyed by fire. If you wish to acquire prior records, you may write to the clerk of the county, where the birth occurred. If you wish to acquire birth certificate copies from January 1, 1917 up to the present, you may communicate with the Division of Vital Statistics of the West Virginia Department of Health. You must first be qualified to request for a certified copy of birth certificate, meaning your name should appear on the certificate, you must be an immediate family member by blood or marriage or a legal representative with court order. Next, you must submit a completed application form, the standard fee of $12 and a copy of a state/government-issued identification card. You may also pay via money order or personal check made payable to the Vital Registration. This standard search fee is, however, non-refundable and will be used to search documents within the year specified and the years before and after it. Another $12-fee is required for another 3-year period computerized search.
