Vermont Birth Records: Discover Your Loved One's True Identity

Birth records are considered part of a state and local government's vital records database, stored for the public to freely examine and use for their own research and information. These records often include copies of official birth certificates, which will provide you with the following information:

  • Date and place of birth
  • Full birth name
  • Full names of parents and their personal identifying information

The state of Vermont started its vital recording of significant events, such as births and deaths, in 1857, but the state failed to accomplish compliance even if registration was enacted at the town level. It is not unusual, however, to discover an entire family to be recorded as a family group prior to 1820. If you wish to obtain birth records that have occurred for the past 5 years, you may contact the Vital Records Unit of the Vermont Department of Health. You must prepare a $10-standard fee, which is non-refundable even if no actual records are found. While for birth records that date back to as ealy as 1760, you may communicate with the Vermont Secretary of State in the State Archives and Record Administration, where records are sent aftey they have been stored for 5 years in the Vital Records Unit. They will require you with the same fee and will allow payment via personal check or money order made payable to the Vermont Secretary of State. If you wish to avail of their mailing service, you must submit the completed application form, valid government-issued photo identification, such as passport or driver's license, and the appropriate fee. It is important to remember to never pay cash via mail. Furthermore, you may also process documents online for a faster and more convenient transaction.
