Birth records are considered part of a state and local government's vital records database, stored for the public to freely examine and use for their own research and information. These records often include copies of official birth certificates, which will provide you with the following information:
- Date and place of birth
- Full birth name
- Full names of parents and their personal identifying information

Utah did not begin its statewide vital recording of important events, such as births, deaths and marriages, until the year 1905. Though there were prior legislative acts that empowered several cities to perform registration of significant events, they were not really required by the state at all. However, county clerks in central county records were required by legislative acts to keep separate records of birth events. If you need a copy of birth records that are already more than 100 years old, you may contact the Division of Archives and Records Service, while you may also obtain birth certificates occurring after January 1, 1905 from the Utah Bureau of Vital Records. For you to qualify as an applicant, your name must appear on the birth certificate or you must be an immediate family member or someone who acquires a written permission from the registrant himself or his family members. In addition, you must submit a completed application form, valid govenrment-issued photo ID, such as passport, driver's license, Military ID or State-issued Identification, and the standard fee of $18. You may also opt to acquire additional copies of the samed document requested at the same time by adding another $8 for each copy. These fees may be paid via money order or personal check made payable to the Vital Records.
