Tennessee had its statewide vital registration of significant events, such as births, in January 1914. However, the state received full compliance from its residents only after 6 years. Though there were prior attempts to record such important events, they were incomplete and unsuccessful. However, some counties, such as Nashville, Knoxville and Chattanooga, had birth records dating back to 1881. In addition, school districts had birth enumeration records from July 1908 to June 1912. The Archives Division of Tennessee Library and Archives also contains birth records that are more than 100 years old. If you wish to obtain certified copies of birth certificates that have occurred between July 1, 1908 and June 30, 1912, you may contact the Tennessee Vital Records. You may be able to apply for a certified copy of birth records only if your name appears on the document; you are an immediate family member or a legal representative. Next, you must submit a completed application form, a copy of a government-issued ID, which has your signature on it, and a standard fee of $15. You may also opt to obtain additional copies of the same record requested at the same time for $8 each. Aside from their mailing and phone service, you may also avail of the more convenient expedited online service, which accepts all major credit cards.
