South Dakota Birth Records: Discover Your Loved One's True Identity

Birth records are considered part of a state and local government's vital records database, stored for the public to freely examine and use for their own research and information. These records often include copies of official birth certificates, which will provide you with the following information:

  • Date and place of birth
  • Full birth name
  • Full names of parents and their personal identifying information

South Dakota started its statewide vital recording of vital events, such as births, in July 1, 1905 and these documents are stored in the Center for Health Statistics of the State Department of Health. For you to be eligible to request for a certified copy of birth certificate, your name must first appear on the requested record, you must be an immediate family member by blood or marriage or you must be a legal representative sent by the court. You may personally visit their office and submit a completed application form, valid government-issued photo identification, such as passport, driver's license or state issued card, as a proof of identity, and the standard fee of $15. This fee is, however, non-refundable even if no documents are found upon search. It will be kept as a search fee for the coming years. You may also use other modes of payment, such as money order or personal check that is made payable to the South Dakota Department of Health. If you prefer to order by mail from the State Office or Register of Deeds, you must submit the same requirements of completed application form with your notarized signature on it or a clear photocopy of your photo ID, together with the appropriate fee. You may also order by phone or you may process your documents online, which is more convenient and promotes faster transaction. An online service will accept all major credit cards with the appropriate handling fee.
