South Carolina Birth Records: Discover Your Loved One's True Identity

Birth records are considered part of a state and local government's vital records database, stored for the public to freely examine and use for their own research and information. These records often include copies of official birth certificates, which will provide you with the following information:

  • Date and place of birth
  • Full birth name
  • Full names of parents and their personal identifying information

As the state of South Carolina started its mandatory statewide vital registration of important events, such as births, on September 1, 1914, it had immediately received 90 per cent of compliance from its residents a year after. While the Charleston County Health Department contains birth records that happened within the city from 1877, Florence County Health Department also stores certificates of birth occurring inside the city from 1895 to 1914. Furthermore, births within the Newberry City have records stored in the Newberry County Health Department. If you wish to obtain a certified copy of a birth certificate occurring after January 1, 1915, you may contact the Bureau of Vital Statistics of the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC). You may personally visit them in their office, wherein you will only wait for about 30-45 minutes. You must bring with you a completed application form, the standard $12-fee and a valid government-issued photo ID, such as a driver's license. You may also opt to obtain additional copies of the same document requested at the same time for only $3 each. Furthermore, you may avail of their mailing service that will take 2-4 weeks of processing, unless you choose to use their expedited mail service that will only take about 3-5 working days for an additional $7. Conversely, you may experience a faster and more convenient transaction by processing your documents online. A service/handling fee will be required, using your credit card as a mode of payment.
