Rhode Island Birth Records: Discover Your Loved One's True Identity

Birth records are considered part of a state and local government's vital records database, stored for the public to freely examine and use for their own research and information. These records often include copies of official birth certificates, which will provide you with the following information:

  • Date and place of birth
  • Full birth name
  • Full names of parents and their personal identifying information

The state of Rhode Island had kept its birth registration for the past 100 years. Its statewide vital recording started in 1853, when copies of birth records were sent to the Rhode Island Division of Vital Statistics. Most of the state's towns still have original records of births that happened even before 1894. For births that occurred after January 1, 1894, you may contact the Division of Vital Records of the Rhode Island Department of Health.  Aside from personally visiting their office, you may also avail of their mailing service, which requires a completed application form, a valid government-issued photo ID, such as a passport, driver's license, and certificate of naturalization, military identification or alien registration card, and the standard fee of $20 for the first certified copy of birth certificate. This standard fee is non-refundable even if no certificates were found. You may also opt to obtain additional copies of the same record requested at the same time for $15. You may also use other payment methods, such as money order or personal check made payable to the Rhode Island Department of Health, Office of Vital Records. Though, the mail service will take about 4-6 weeks of processing, you may avail of their expedited service by adding another $7 and writing 'rush' on your envelope. You may also avail of the more convenient online service, which accepts all major credit cards.
