Oregon started its statewide vital recording of important events, such as births, deaths and marriages, in 1903. The Oregon State Archives in Salem provides birth records of fifteen out of 36 counties of the state, namely Benton, Clackamas, Columbia, Douglas, Jackson, Lincoln, Linn, Marion, Multnomah (Portland), Polk, Tillamook, Umatilla, Wasco, Washington and Yamhill. The other counties' vital records after January 1, 1903 are found in the Center for Health Statistics (Vital Records) of the Oregon Center of Health Statistics, which has the responsibility to certify, ammend, register and issue the state's vital documents. Aside form personally visiting this office, you may also avail of their mailing service, which will require enclosure of a completed application form, valid government-issued picture ID, such as passport or driver's license, your return address, telephone number, and a non-refundable standard fee of $20. You may also opt to obtain additional copies of the same requesed documents by adding $15 for each copy. These fees may be paid via money order or personal check made payable to the DHS Vital Records. However, this mailing service will take about 5 weeks of processing, unlike the online service that provides a more convenient and faster transaction.
