Birth records are considered part of a state and local government's vital records database, stored for the public to freely examine and use for their own research and information. These records often include copies of official birth certificates, which will provide you with the following information:
- Date and place of birth

North Dakota started its statewide vital recording of important events, such as births, deaths and marriages, in 1893 with the help of the township clerks. Though this law was retracted in 1895, it was reenacted in 1899. By 1923, every copy of birth registration was mandated to be sent to the then established State Department of Vital Records. If you wish to obtain a certified copy of birth records after July 1, 1893, you may communicate with the Division of Vital Records of the North Dakota Department of Health. For your application to be processed, however, you must first present an identity proof and a proof of relationship with the individual named on the certificate. This was particularly implemented on January 1, 2008 to prevent unfortunate occurrence of identity theft and fraud. Thus, you are required to present a valid govenrment/state-issued photo ID, such as a driver's license or a passport. Without the presence of any photo ID, your application will be sent back to you. For you to be qualified as an applicant, your name should appear on the record, may you be the registrant yourself or a parent. If you avail of the mailing or phone service, your application will be processed after 5-7 business days. By contrast, you may achieve faster and more convenient transaction when you avail of an online service, which accepts all major creidt cards.
