North Carolina Birth Records: Discover Your Loved One's True Identity

Birth records are considered part of a state and local government's vital records database, stored for the public to freely examine and use for their own research and information. These records often include copies of official birth certificates, which will provide you with the following information:

  • Date and place of birth
  • Full birth name
  • Full names of parents and their personal identifying information

North Carolina birth certificates have been collected ever since October 1913. North Carolina had fulfilled its statewide vital recording by the year 1920. Thus, if you wish to obtain birth certificates occurring after 1913, you may write to the Vital Records Section of the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services, and avail of their standard service using a mail or drop off form. Aside from the state office, you may also consult the register of deeds in your county for obtaining such vital documents. Before you can gain access to these significant records, you must be eligible first to do so. Primarily, your name should appear on the requested certificate or you must show proof that you are an immediate family member or legal representative by showing a court order. Send your written request for the certificate’s first copy and include a $24-fee, which may be paid via money order, certified check or business check made payable to the North Carolina Vital Records. It will take about 3 to 5 weeks for them to process your request.  Furthermore, there will be no refunds of money even if no certificates are found. In addition, delayed certificates could also be requested from the Vital Records Section. However, a standard search should initially be performed by the department to make sure that no certificate currently exists. You may also opt to visit them personally in their office or avail of the more convenient expedited online service, which accepts all major credit cards.
