The state of New Jersey is among the states that had the earliest statewide vital recording of birth events, which could date back to as early as May 1, 1848. These documents are now stored at the New Jersey State Archives, while births after 1901 up to the present are now indexed in the State Bureau of Vital Statistics and Registration. If you wish to obtain a copy of a birth certificate, you must first enclosed a proof of relationship to the individual named on the record, a completed application form, valid government/state-issued identification card and the non-refundable fee of $25. You may also opt ot obtain additional copies of the same requested document for $2 each. These fees can also be paid via money order or personal check made payable to the New Jersey General Treasury. In addition, these certified copies of birth records could only be issued to individuals whose name appears on the record, and to immediate family members or legal representatives who are of legal age. If you are not any of the mentioned required applicants, you may only be given a certiifcation stating that the documents are not for legal  purposes or identification. Furthermore, they offer mailing, fax, phone and walk-in services. You may also be allowed to process your documents online for a more convenient and faster transaction.
