Montana Birth Records: Discover Your Loved One's True Identity

Birth records are considered part of a state and local government's vital records database, stored for the public to freely examine and use for their own research and information. These records often include copies of official birth certificates, which will provide you with the following information:

  • Date and place of birth
  • Full birth name
  • Full names of parents and their personal identifying information

Though Montana started its statewide vital recording of important events, such as births and deaths, in 1907,  it was until 1915 when the mandatory registration of such events had been successful. However, it was by the year  1922 when about 90 per cent of compliance was achieved by the state from its residents. If you wish to obtain documents of birth prior to 1907, you may contact the clerk of the county, where the birth occurred, while for births after the said year, you may communicate with the Department of Public Health and Human Services (DPHHS). Just like any other state, you must first be eligible to gain access to the restricted files of the state of Montana. That is your name should appear on the certificate, and you must be an immediate family member by blood or marriage or a legal representative, who can present a court order. In addition to these, you have to present a copy of your valid state/government-issued photo ID along with the standard search fee of $12. You may also opt to obtain additional copies of the same requested document by paying another $5-fee each. These payments may be paid via money order or personal check made payable to the Montana Vital Records. Aside from the offered phone, mail and fax services, you may also process your documents online for a faster and more convenient transaction.
