Massachusetts Birth Records: Discover Your Loved One's True Identity

Birth records are considered part of a state and local government's vital records database, stored for the public to freely examine and use for their own research and information. These records often include copies of official birth certificates, which will provide you with the following information:

  • Date and place of birth
  • Full birth name
  • Full names of parents and their personal identifying information

Though Massachusetts began its statewide vital recording of significant events, such as births and deaths, in 1841, the state actually had earlier records that could date back to as early as 1635. By the year 1906, the Registry of Vital Records of the Department of Public Health had been established to further promote the organized collection and filed storage of birth records. Every five years though, these restricted documents are transferred to the State Archives resulting to the removal of any imposed restriction on them. Thus, birth documents that occurred from 1841 to 1915 are found in the State Archives, while prior birth records are found in the county in question. However, for birth records after 1916 up to the present, you may consult the Registry of Vital Records and Statistics of the Massachusetts Department of Public Health. This Office issues certified copies of birth certificates as well as Heirloom birth certificates, which commemorates special births and marriages. Furthermore, you must submit a completed application form, a valid photo ID and a standard search fee of $15. You may also opt to include additional copies of the same documents requested at the same time for only $5 each. Moreover, if you wish to obtain delayed birth certificates and amending birth certificates, you are required to pay an additional fee of $10. Aside from their typical walk-in, phone and mailing service, you may also avail of the more convenient expedited online service, which accepts all major credit cards.
