Maine Birth Records: Discover Your Loved One's True Identity

Birth records are considered part of a state and local government's vital records database, stored for the public to freely examine and use for their own research and information. These records often include copies of official birth certificates, which will provide you with the following information:

  • Date and place of birth
  • Full birth name
  • Full names of parents and their personal identifying information

As early as the 18th century, the local towns of Maine have started their vital recording of important events, such as births and deaths. By the time that Maine had been proclaimed as a separate state in 1820, two hundred of its towns had already stored birth registrations of their residents. Though by 1864, the state mandated each town to send records of births, deaths and marriages to the State Secretary, poor compliance was shown until 1892, when the State Board of Vital Statistics had been established. These vital records from 1892 to 1923 can be found in the Maine State Archives. Aside from the original records found in the town clerk's office, birth certificates that have occurred after 1923 up to the present could also be accessed in the Office of Vital Records of the Maine Department of Human Services. Before you could gain access to these vital documents, you must first meet the eligibility requirements of the state. Next, you must bring the needed requirements, such as a completed application form, a valid photo ID and the standard fee of $15. You may also opt to obtain additional copies of the same document requested at the same time by paying another $6 each. In addition, you may avail of their walk-in, phone or mailing services for the processing of your requested birth certificate. Furthermore, you may process your documents online for a more convenient and faster transaction.
