Louisiana Birth Records: Discover Your Loved One's True Identity

Birth records are considered part of a state and local government's vital records database, stored for the public to freely examine and use for their own research and information. These records often include copies of official birth certificates, which will provide you with the following information:

  • Date and place of birth
  • Full birth name
  • Full names of parents and their personal identifying information

The state of Louisiana had collected all records of birth registration for the past 100 years. Though each county parish health department has alphabetical birth indexes during the earlier years, they do not have complete lists to offer. If you wish to obtain birth certificates that have happened from 1990 up to the present, you may contact the Office of Public Health’s Vital Records Registry. Louisiana is considered as a closed record state, which means that its vital records, such as certificates of birth and death, are not public documents. So for you to be able to gain access to these important papers, you must present proper identification, such as a driver’s license or a state-issued card. Also, you are only qualified to request for a certified birth copy if your name appears on the certificate and if you are an immediate family member (parent, sibling, grandparent, adult offspring/grandchild). If you are another adult legal guardian, you must show a judgment of custody for the child. You should also bring the standard fee of $15.50 for long form copies or $9.50 for short form copies of birth certificates. You could also personally visit their office or you may avail of their phone or mail services. For convenience, however, you may opt to use their online service for an additional fee.
