Kentucky Birth Records: Discover Your Loved One's True Identity

Birth records are considered part of a state and local government's vital records database, stored for the public to freely examine and use for their own research and information. These records often include copies of official birth certificates, which will provide you with the following information:

  • Date and place of birth
  • Full birth name
  • Full names of parents and their personal identifying information

Though Kentucky had its statewide birth registration in 1852, poor compliance was achieved as the legislation was enacted for only ten years. During 1872 to 1910, sporadic vital recording was performed until mandatory birth registration was followed on January 1, 1911. However, the official statewide vital recording of significant events, such as births and deaths, was reenacted in 1958. So if you wish to obtain certificates of birth that have occurred after January 1911, you may contact the Office of Vital Statistics of the Kentucky Department for Libraries and Archives. A standard $10-fee is required for the first certified copy of the requested birth certificate. You may pay via several methods, such as money order or personal check that is made payable to Kentucky State Treasurer. You may then personally visit them at their office or avail of their mail, fax or phone service. However, their mail service may take about 30 business days of processing. By contrast, you may avail of their expedited online service, which may be more convenient for your part. You have to know though, that there might be longer delays of processing during peak request periods, starting May to September. It is then recommended that you apply earlier, especially those who plan for retirement and for documents that are required for passports, sports programs, school enrollment and other reasons.
