Indiana Birth Records: Discover Your Loved One's True Identity

Birth records are considered part of a state and local government's vital records database, stored for the public to freely examine and use for their own research and information. These records often include copies of official birth certificates, which will provide you with the following information:

  • Date and place of birth
  • Full birth name
  • Full names of parents and their personal identifying information

The statewide recording of births for the state of Indiana started in October 1907, and these documents are now found at the Vital Records of the Indiana State Department of Health. Earlier records could also be consulted with the Health Officer of the city or county, where the event occured. These are restricted records though, so you must be eligible to be able to gain access to such significant documents. Primarily, you must be the person named on the certificate or you must be able to present proof that you are an immediate family member or a legal representative by showing a court order. For you to obtain a certificate of birth, you must know all the needed facts so that you may be able to fill all the questions in the application form and sign it, you must pay the standard fee of $10.00, and present a valid photo identification, such as a passport, driver's license, State-issued Identification card or Military ID.

If you want to request another additional copy, another $4-fee is required. The searching fee is not refundable though. You may make your payments via money order or personal check made payable to the Indiana State Department of Health. Aside from availing their walk-in, mailing and phone service, you may also process your documents online, where faster and more convenient transactions are offered. Online services accept all major credit cards.
