California Birth Records: Discover Your Loved One's True Identity

Birth records are considered part of a state and local government's vital records database, stored for the public to freely examine and use for their own research and information. These records often include copies of official birth certificates, which will provide you with the following information:

  • Date and place of birth
  • Full birth name
  • Full names of parents and their personal identifying information

In 1905, California started its vital recording of significant events, such as births, deaths and marriages, that have occurred within the state. If you wish to obtain copies of birth records prior to July 1, 1905, you may contact the clerk of the county where the birth occurred, while you may communicate with the Office of Vital Records and Statistics of the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) for births occurring after the mentioned date. However, these are restricted documents and therefore not considered as public records. You are only allowed to request certified copies of such vital documents only if you are the individual whose name appears on the record, or if you can show proof that you are an immediate family member or a legal representative. If you do not meet the above criteria, you may only obtain certified informational certificates. Unless you only wish to acquire informational copies, you are required to submit a sworn statement. In addition, you must include the required service fee of $14 for certified copies of birth certificates, which will take about 18 weeks of processing, or you may obtain delayed birth certificate copies for $20 and will take about 3 months of processing. These fees can be paid via money order or personal check made payable to the Office of Vital Records. These fees, however, are non-refundable even if no documents are found upon search.
