Alabama Birth Records: Discover Your Loved One's True Identity

Birth records are considered part of a state and local government's vital records database, stored for the public to freely examine and use for their own research and information. These records often include copies of official birth certificates, which will provide you with the following information:

  • Date and place of birth
  • Full birth name
  • Full names of parents and their personal identifying information

An act was mandated in the state of Alabama to allow the vital registration of important events, such as births and deaths, as each county officer's responsibility as early as 1881. However, Alabama only received poor compliance from its residents on January 1, 1908. After 19 years, the state finally received 90 per cent compliance. For birth records prior to 1908, you may contact the concerned clerk of the county where the even occurred, while you may communicate with the Center for Health Statistics of the Alabama Department of Public Health for births after 1908.

This deparment manages vital records, such as certifificates of births, deaths, marriages and divorces, that happened within the state of Alabama. They also use an automated vital records system called Vital Statistics Image Oriented Network (VISION), which provides issuance of vital records of the 67 counties of Alabama. In addition, you must prepare the standard search fee of $15 for the first certified copy, while you may request additional copies of the same document requested at the same time by adding another $6 for each copy.

These fees may be paid via money order or personal check made payable to the Center for Health Statistics. You may opt to personally visit their offices, or you may avail of their mailing service, which takes about 7-10 business days. For your convenience though, you may avail of the expedited online service, wherein all major credit cards are accepted.
